Get to know this service

OutREACH Cumbria works to promote equality and diversity and to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It raises public awareness of issues affecting the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across Cumbria.

The charity began in 1994 and became a registered charity working specifically with the LGBTQIA+ community in 2012. Its management committee identify as LGBTQIA+ themselves or have a family member who does, bringing skills in psychotherapy, healthcare, finance, education, local government, IT and community work. It may also offer a professional advice service, research support, training and policy development.

Its Transgender Wellbeing Hub opened in May 2022, offering a social space, a listening ear and face-to-face psychotherapy to transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse people. It runs a Monday drop-in with a trained counsellor and project workers, plus social evenings, clothing swap days, outings and a monitored Discord group for peer contact.

OutREACH Cumbria also runs an LGBTQIA+ lending library, offering informational and fictional books suitable for a range of ages. Books can be borrowed free of charge, and people can donate books or suggest titles for the collection.
