Wakefield Pride is a registered charity run by volunteers and trustees. It began in 2005 after a request from the youth group Fruitbowl to organise an LGBTQIA+ Pride event in the city.
The organisation hosts an annual Pride event, including a parade through Wakefield city centre and an afternoon of free entertainment open to the public. The aim is to celebrate the diverse cultures and lifestyles of the LGBTQIA+ community and challenge stereotypes.
The first event in 2005 drew around 2000 attendees, with about 1000 people joining the march. The group has also helped people report hate crime incidents to the police and advised on employment and housing issues.
Wakefield Pride has received several awards over the years, including recognition at the 2023 SME Northern Enterprise Awards. Events have been held at various locations across Wakefield, including the Cathedral Precinct and Trinity Walk shopping centre.
